Silver City, NM -- The Western New Mexico women's basketball team came about a half-second short of getting their second win of the season Thursday as they fell 60-57 to visiting UC-Colorado Springs.
The Mustangs were in the game the whole way and when senior Natalie Lara's game tying 3-pointer found its mark it looked like the game would head into overtime, but the officials waived the shot off, saying it came after the buzzer.
The loss moved the Lady Stangs to 1-8, while Colorado Springs improved to 3-8.
Western continued to have trouble finding the hole, shooting just 39 percent, but they held Springs to just 36 percent. The difference in the game came on the glass as the Mountain Lions had a 13-board lead on the Stangs for the game.
Strangely, Western didn't shoot a free throw in the first half, but went 10-of-12 in the second half.
Ashley Vigil's 12 points led Western while Crystal Smith also notched double figures with 10.
WNMU will entertain visiting Regis Saturday night. Game time is set for 6:00pm for the ladies and 8:00pm for the men.
